Literally sitting around. Not really me since I like to be active. It has been an interesting 8 weeks so far. No work has been hard. Waiting for income insurance to be paid. Relying on hubby to do basically everything for me. Thankfully I could still go to the toilet by myself. Divinity once again went out the window. Eight casts later, 6 pins, 2 screws and a plate in my right ankle I am now sporting a moon boot. So much better than the plaster even though there was many colours to choose. One was pink before the operation but the last one was green. It has been an interesting 8 weeks. Hubby hired a wheelchair for me so we could still got out. What surprised me was how ignorant people are towards people with disabilities. I was actually doing the shopping one day and the male checkout operator would not even acknowledge me and would only speak to hubby and was quite annoyed that he had to move the pin pad down so I could pay for my purchases. Other things I found was people would literally step over the front of the wheelchair or cut in front of you. I have also realised that this house we are in is the last highest we will ever be in. I can't wait for the day that I can once again walk up and down the stairs. Thankfully we have internal stairs or I would be putting on a show for the neighbourhood. Lol yes I am still crawling up the stairs on my knees and sliding down the stairs on my bottom. It is so great to have the moonboot now. I am starting to slowly walk again with a lot of help from mums walking frame which I hadn't got rid of yet. Finally I am able to havE a shower without a sporting a garbage bag. The moonboot has given me a bit more indepence but can't wait until I no longer need it. Next Monday is my first day of physio so hopefully I can return to work in the new year. I can't wait until I can drive again. So many things that I am looking forward in doing.. ...

Sue Grierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00537498367977060937noreply@blogger.com0Clontarf Clontarf-27.23772 153.085397tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2690349012931847947.post-9960851576698450882014-05-31T13:22:00.002-07:002014-05-31T13:22:50.975-07:00Costco's or NotThis Granny lives at Redcliffe so not that far from North Lakes which is the new home of Queensland's first Costco store. When I first heard about this store I thought no I'm not going to pay a membership to shop at a store. Yes I have Everyday Rewards Cards, Fly Buy Cards and other shop cards in my bag which are free but to pay for a membership for a year I thought certainly not.
Driving down the highway every so often I would see the progress of this massive warehouse being built. In February this year I thought what the heck I will pay my $55 (Business Member) and see what it is all about. As you are all aware I make soap so I need bulk oils to do this. My most expensive oils are Grapeseed and Olive Oils which costs are high. Plus it also means not having to pay for postage from some of the places I purchase these products from.

A few weeks ago I went in with my receipt and business documents to collect my card. Hubby was with me so he picked up his. I was wondering how they were going to police people not handing over their cards to their friends. That was easy each card has your photo on it. Fair enough I don't have an issue with that at all.

As we walked out of the area with our new cards we decided to check out the price of fuel. We have 2 4WDS that use Diesel fuel and in the Redcliffe Area we are paying $1.60.9 cents a litre. It costs us $100 a week to fill the Colorado. Off to the pump and noticed Diesel $1.42 cents a litre. 18 cents cheaper than what we normally paid. Filled the tank up and costs us $88 a saving of $12 straight away. Great saving already and the shop isn't even opened. We now fuel up there every week. A saving of over $20 for both cars. In 3 weeks we will have our money back. I thought even if I don't shop there it is worth having the cards just for the savings on fuel. What I also really liked about the fuel station is no waiting in line to go into a shop to pay. You use your card at the pump. The friendly staff there show you how to do it and each time you visit they will check to see if you need a hand with anything. I know I don't get this from Caltex or Shell in the area. The staff there are so helpful.

Yesterday we decided to get over to Costco's to visit the store. We arrived to fuel up first. Diesel was sitting at $1.44 a litre still so much cheaper that Redcliffe. We arrived at about 8.15am knowing that Saturday was the third day they were open and the first weekend. We knew it was going to be busy. By 9am the parking area was full and the doors opened.

What an amazing store. Even with the amount of people outside once inside you really didn't notice the amount of people. Bill, William and I slowly checked out the store. By 11am my trolley was full and I was happy with the savings I had made. Yes some things may be a bit dearer or the same price as Woolworths or Coles but most items are great savings. Their fresh foods are well priced and I am now a converted Costco member. It was also so great to see so many small Aussie brands in there as well. I purchased Carmens Muesli bars. A box of 20 well priced around the $10 mark. Campfire Marshmallows about $6. They are so big and we are heading out camping next week. Sauces were cheap. We were out of BBQ sauce and seem to go through it so quickly so I was happy to buy a big 4ltre bottle for about $8. If there are any soapmakers reading this 2 litres of Grapeseed oil is only $13. Massive savings. 5 litres of olive oil is about $25. Over to the fresh food and first thing I think about is easy dinner for Saturday night. Picked up a massive fresh pizza for $11.39. Only need one. (BWT did find it hard fitting in the fridge and had to use the downstairs fridge and stood it up). Softdrinks were cheap. Coke Can pack of 36 cans $24. Fresh foods have great savings especially in the meat section and the fridges. The list of saving go on. I was happy with what was in my trolley so off to the check out we go.

Didn't wait long and a lovely lady helps me unload the trolley onto the belt. Asks for my card and straight away greets me by my name since it is on my card. I don't get that at Coles or Woolies. At the register the checkout lady says "How has your morning been Sue". Not use to this much politeness at a shop. Well done Costco's it is so nice to see good customer service.

All in all I enjoyed the Costco Shopping experience and will definitely return next week. There will be people who won't like it and will say it is a waste of money. I suppose if I didn't live so close I may not of joined but I love it. The savings are fantastic. Customer service amazing. Well done Costco's.
This year again we decided to head to Mt Warning Tourist Park. Last year saw us head there just for the 4 day Easter break but this year we have made it 12 days. This has been the longest stretch we have spent in the caravan so far and only a couple of hiccups. The second night in all our lights went off and now we are thinking that all the lights are hooked only up to the solar. Over the last week we have really reduced our light usage and this hasn't happened again. The park is truly beautiful this time of year and of course the cool nights and mornings are great. The park offers so many types of accommodation. We are in the front part of the park but out the back you have the camping area with a very large camp kitchen. You can choose powered or non powered sites out the back. There is also another lot of amenties there. The shop/checking area is stocked full of groceries in case you forgot anything as well as ice and firewood. Yes you can have your own fire pit

If you are looking to get away and camp with th kids but still have the benefits of showers and toilets I can truly recommend this place. If you are looking for luxury then this is not the place. If you are not into camping but still love the peace and quiet they do have cabins that you can rent but during peak times and long weekends the place is busy.

The owners and staff are friendly and real down to earth people. There is a swimming pool and a games room for the kids if they do get bored but I really can't see that happening.

Check out the photos and the small video and see for yourself.

Sue Grierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00537498367977060937noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2690349012931847947.post-34483933942075611682014-04-03T12:05:00.003-07:002014-04-03T12:05:22.373-07:00Family and Friends: Their support is what keeps me going. Its been awhile since I have blogged. Time has past very quickly this year. I can remember in January that this year 2014 was going to be my year. I had that positive cap on and was looking forward to a great year. So far things have been like sitting on a roller coaster ride. It has had its ups but of course it has had its downs. Though all of the turmoil with work and business I have been lucky that I have the most amazing husband who has encouraged me to fight through the crappy stuff and be the best person. I am in the process of finding a new job and have been out looking for the last couple of months but due to stuff it has now become a priority. I have realised that the job I always wanted to do is not all that it seems. Don't get me wrong I actually love what I do but now think I am much better doing it in another organisation. Through all of this one thing that keeps me going is my amazing family and a few very special friends in my life.
In the last couple of weeks my mum has not been well and I have had to spend some time searching for a nursing home for her. Not one thing I wanted to do but knew it was for the best. She deserves the best care possible and we could no longer do it. Its been a hard couple of weeks. I know I never ever will have to do it again.
I am hoping I find new job opportunities shortly but in the mean time I am looking forward to a couple of weeks break at Easter. Only 13 days until that caravan is hooked up and we head back down to Mt Warning for 12 days.
We all want to do what is best for our children. We listen to chemists and doctors because apparently they know best. Or do they. Do you ever think how much kick back they get from major companies to promote their products.

Over the years of soap making, attending markets etc I have heard so many comments like. Ï can't use soap I get a rash. The doctor has told me I am allergic to soap. Soap is bad for you. I can only use liquid soap. Soap has dangerous chemicals in it. The list is endless. You ask any soap maker and they all get the same statements made at them.

Today I went to the supermarket with my daughter and she mentioned to me that she found a ECO soap at Woolworths the other day which was lemongrass. It smelt so nice but the list of ingredients on the back was daunting. Even though it was only about $1.50 a bar she said no. Yes I to am wondering why she was looking at soap in a supermarket but won't go there. lol Any way she showed me the soap and I deciphered the ingredients list. First ingredient was Palm Oil then Coconut oil then loads of chemicals including SLSA which is a foaming agent which is also used in car wash, degreaser etc....... I personally wouldn't use it.

Another thing that really worries me is those Washes. Especially QV Wash. Have you read the ingredients. Do you know what they are. Ok lets first look at handmade Soap and what is in that or what is in the ones I make.

Sunflower, Olive, Coconut, Grapeseed Oils, Water, depending on the liquids if I am making a Goatsmilk Soap I actually use Goatsmilk. Not powdered but real Goatsmilk. If I scent it I will use either essential oils or fragrances especially made for soaps. Colours may be natural clays, natural colouring or skin safe colours. I list all my ingredients from largest amount used to smallest.
Yes when you make soap you need to use caustic soda. No matter what any other soap seller says if you don't use caustic soda you can't make soap. Even those pretty clear soaps you buy have caustic in them. Most people buy the base already made up so they don't actually have to use caustic and all they need to do is melt it down and add colour and fragrance. The hard work is all done. But did you also know that when you buy that handmade soap the caustic is gone. There is no active caustic in that bar of soap. It is safe for you and your family to use.

Now lets look at QV Wash. I have a customer who I met through my husbands work who had been using this for years as he suffered from really bad eczema and the doctor told him that soap was bad for him and he could only use this product. He hasn't used QV for quite a few years and is a regular customer of my Goats milk Soap.

I am going to now let you know about all those ingredients on the back of that bottle of QV wash and what they mean.

Aqua - Water (that's fine)
Sodium Lauryl sulphate- Is a detergent, a crystalline salt of sufated lauryl alcohol which is also used in degreaser and floor cleaners.
Glycerin- No problem with this. My handmade soaps have glycerine in them.
Lauryl Betaine- Synthetic Vegetable Derived Liquid.
Disodium Cocoamphodiacetate- this is a preservative but there are better more natural preservatives on the market.
Sodium cocylisethionate- sodium salt derived from coconut oil
Peg 120 Methyl Glucose Dioleate- this is a thickner. But some studies in America have linked it to breast cancer. This should not be used on broken skin.
Glycol distearate- Chemical compound emollient. This is a pearlizing agent. This makes it white.
Methyl Paraben- An anti fungal agent. This is a controversy ingredient. There has been some concerns over Parabens in products as it has been known to disrupt hormone functions and is also linked to increase risk of cancer.
Citric Acid- Not harmful
Propyl Paraben- Again another paraben. Paraben is bad for you and should be avoided. Quite a few products are out on the market that are Paraben Free.

The list above is scary isn't. Would I use this wash. NO not in a million years. Are there better products on the market. YES Plain handmade soap. That's all you need. Handmade soaps with Milk are great. Whether you buy my soap or another soapmakers soap they can tell you exactly what is in their products. No chemicals, no nasties just plain soap.

Wow it really has been awhile since my last blog. I have neglected it and I am sorry but life has been very busy these days but I hope to blog a bit more.

Yesterday when I came home from work I was craving some cake. Not any old cake but handmade Date Cake. Looking in the cupboard of course there was a pack of dates. I decided that I would prepare them so I could cook it the next night. Below you will see the recipe. I am not one for exact measurements. I don't use a cup measurement but use a coffee cup instead so measurements will be by coffee cup.

1 1/2 cups of chopped dates
1 teaspoon of ground ginger
3/4 cup boiling water
1/2 cup port
1 teaspoon of Bi carb

Mix all of the above ingredients together in a bowl and set aside in the fridge for at least 24 hours.

2 1/2 cups SR Flour
1 cup Brown Sugar
1/4 cup of Cocoa
1 egg
1/4 cup Olive Oil
1 to 1/2 cups of Soda Water (Yes I know weird ingredient)

Mix the first 4 ingredients together. Add the date mix. Add in the Olive oil and mix by hand. Add in the Soda water until it is of a good cake batter consistency. No electric beaters needed just do by hand.

Pour batter into a greased and floured round cake pan and place in a preheated oven of 160 degrees for approx. 1 hour. I have an old oven that is not fan forced so it took an hour. If you have a fan forced oven I would start checking it at the 45 minute time.

I have changed my whole eating pattern and have rid myself of all those processed foods and junk. It is amazing how much companies who sell the so call diet products really aren't that good for you at all and they are the reason you do not lose much weight. At this time I have now managed to lose just over 6kg which is great. I can't wait until I can fit into at least a size 14-16 dress. That was the size I was when I met Bill all those years ago. I know I have awhile until I reach that but I am determined to do it.

In my kitchen I have a whiteboard where at the moment I have a quote that I love...............

I have the same determination that I had when I gave up smoking 5 years ago. I feel the healthiest that I have felt for along time and I am so far off my target weight. What are my secrets............... There really isn't any secrets. I walk. Every morning I wake up at 4.45 am and have a cup of coffee then I head down to the beach at Redcliffe and walk. I normally walk about 3-4 km in the morning before I go to work. I am a morning person so early mornings don't bother me. I'm not the only one and so many people are down there doing the same thing. Even on the weekends I do the same. I walk. Some afternoons after work I head to Scarborough and walk before I need to pick up William.

My food choices have changed so much. I eat loads of greens, and of course fruit. Nuts, eggs, avocado, berries, fish, chicken, steak and so much more.

I don't eat chocolates and of course junk food but have also taken out bread, pasta, processed cereals, crackers and diet (low fat) so called foods, Gluten free foods I really check the labels to see the fat and sugar content. Fake butters and margarine and vegetable oil. I have removed Soy, wheat and corn from my eating.

I do have a few things I want to do............ I have decided to join the Dragon Boat Club here at Redcliffe. I need to be a bit fitter to do this but know I can achieve this. I will be buying myself a pushbike as well. Last time I rode one I was 15.

So for now my clothes are slowly becoming baggy which I am loving. I can't weight until I reach that size 14 and know I will get there.

Last Saturday was a very special day for our family. This is the day that my eldest grandson Callum was being awarded for the "Children of Courage" Award through the Lions Club of Australia. It truly was a great afternoon witnessing so many children receiving their awards and listening to their stories of the many obstacles they have had to overcome in their lives. It made me really realise how lucky we are. Some of these "Special children" have had to overcome major health issues that we would never want our children to have. Some are confined to a wheelchair, ASD, and have various impairments but the one thing they all have in common is that they have shown great courage and bravery.

You all may of read a previous blog I did on my other blog page about State school issues with Callum and see the issues Callum was facing at school. At the beginning it was so hard to see my grandson going through so much crap. I hated to see my daughter having to deal with it but she did it. Instead of sitting back and just being another family dealing with ASD in Queensland with little support from anyone my Grandson and mother fought back.

I had tears in my eyes when Callum was called up to receive his award on Saturday. This grandma was so proud. You see Callum and I have this special bond and that will never ever change. I truly adore all my grandchildren and treat them all the same. I am blessed with 5 amazing grandbabies and can't wait to attend all their special moments in their lives.

Thank you to the Lions club of Australia for this award. This organisation does so many fantastic things for the community.Sue Grierhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00537498367977060937noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2690349012931847947.post-21868282785784744672013-10-17T14:06:00.000-07:002013-10-17T14:06:34.396-07:00The Lifestyle Change Begins......................................!Well its only been a couple of days since I was given the news of change your lifestyle, eating habits, exercise regime and work on your stress levels or you will have a heart attack or stroke in the future. I'm feeling quite good at the moment and have taken all the advice. Funny how something can change your whole outlook on life. There has been quite a few massive things that has happened in my life that has impacted me so much. Meeting and marrying my man was a positive impact. Birth of our children positive. The loss of 2 sisters in 10 years was negative and at present I am not ready to be the 3rd sister.

I had a look at my eating habits of late which consisted of snack foods, food, wine, chocolate, pizza etc. You get the idea. So easy in the morning to throw in a couple of muesli bars a chocolate and a apple into my handbag to keep me going at work. Very rarely would I actually have a lunch break away from the computer so was eating on the run. Travelling through Brisbane in the car from one side of town to the other was probably the best lunch break I had. The reason for the snack foods are easy to eat when you are driving. Wasn't a breakfast person but occasionally may stop at the shop near work for a strong coffee to kick start the work morning with. Funny by the time I got home and picked up William from his day service it was now close on 6pm. I made sure most nights he had a cooked dinner which consisted of fish, salad and chips or spaghetti, or sausages. Most nights I didn't eat as I didn't feel hungry. Some nights I spend long hours creating candles, making soaps, wrapping soaps and filling and sending out orders for Green Me Up Granny. Some nights I would have a glass or two of wine. Friday nights were always Pizza Night. William loves pizza night. I would also stop at the bottle shop on the way home for a bottle or two of wine.
Weekends consisted of catching up with family or setting up a market stall somewhere. This also meant lots of fast foods or quick easy things to buy to eat. Sausage Sizzles, Hamburgers etc. You get the picture.

As you can see my eating habits <strike>are</strike> were bad. In a length of 5 days everything changed.

I really checked out websites, different diets, meal replacements, diet tablets etc to find out different ways to lose some weight. The real issue I had with all of this was the four letter word DIET.

I really don't like that word as I have tried so many DIETS over the years I don't want to set myself up to fail again. All I need to do is to change my foods and exercise. Walk. Walk, Walk.

Yesterday saw me purchase a Magic Bullet.

I love it. My new toy that will play such a big part of my healthy lifestyle journey. I have already started using it.

My DH with my SIL also moved a massive Treadmill from my daughters place to here. No easy feat as it was heavy as anything and of course didn't fit through any of the doors. They had to pull it a part to get it inside. It is all set up and yesterday I walked 1 km. I know not much but it is to a person who is obese and doesn't exercise. Slow steady steps.

As you can see very little room to swing a cat around but the treadmill is in and I will continue the 1 km walk each day and slowly build up the speed and distance as the days progress.

My eating has changed. I now have breakfast and its healthy. I have a healthy snack at morning tea.. Salad for lunch, piece of fruit or handful of almonds in the afternoon and a healthy dinner. I also found this clear stuff in the tap here called water and starting to drink plenty of it.

I am not ready yet to advise the world of my current weight as I am embarrassed that I could let myself go so much. I will put a couple of pictures up. One of me when I met Bill all those years ago and one of me last week fishing. You will then understand why I am not ready.

It was a glorious week of relaxation. Fishing and just enjoying the scenery. We did head into Childers for the morning and came across this amazing Pharmacy Museum in the main street. If you are ever in Childers you need to check it out. The couple who run it knows quite a bit of history.

We spent a couple of days fishing but didn't catch anything but it was so relaxing. The beach was straight across the road from the park so we went for plenty of walks and loads of shells to collect.

If you are looking for a place to get away from everything this is certainly the place to do it. Only a couple of shops there so was great to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life.
After spending a glorious week at Woodgate in Queensland I had to return to work on Monday. (Will do another blog on our holiday). Monday morning got out of bed not feeling the best. Very light headed but new as a Manager I had to go to work as a week off meant that I had a weeks worth of work that I needed to catch up on plus deal with the normal things that I have to do. Arrived at work just before 7am as I knew today would be a long day and would not get home until at least 6pm tonight. How wrong was I.

After arriving and unlocking dealing with the first issue of the morning which was staff telephoning in sick. Agency staff organised. The list continues. Pays need to be done. Staff claiming for days they weren't at work being denied. Phone calls from my manager. More things to do. Variances due. Some staff having issues completing time sheets. Following up things that happened over the week. Sifting through nearly 100 emails. Reports to complete. Clients arriving wanting me for different reasons. Blah! Blah !Blah! The list is endless and I have only been at work just over 90 minutes. The next hour was a bit of a blur.

Tightness in chest, aching arm, sweating, cold, dead arm feeling and staff are now telephoning ambulance. Taken off to Prince Charles Hospital. I won't go into anymore but I am home now but a big wake up call.

Green Me Up Granny needs to take control of her life. Make some lifestyle changes and better choices or next time it could be a lot serious.

Need to cut out a lot of the foods that I have been eating. More home cooked low fat foods. More vegetable etc. Everyone knows the rest. More exercise. Found this one a challenge since work hours and running a home business is very time consuming but going to try.

Love you to follow my journey. Not returning to work until at least next Monday on a directive from my Manager. This gives me time to start and change a few things.

Today Bill is heading to the daughters place to pick up a treadmill for me. We did a swap. Then I need to start looking at the foods etc to eat and remove those processed foods from the cupboard, fridge and freezer.

Todays the start of my new and improved life. I know it is not going to be easy but I need to make sure that I am still around for my grandchildren's weddings etc. Plus Bill and I have just celebrated 27 years of marriage. I want to see out at least 2 more life sentences with him. lol
I was only reading on a comment on Facebook the other day that apparently there is only 15 weeks until Christmas. Quite scary isn't it. I had to quickly stop into the supermarket here the other day and notice some of the Christmas food is starting to appear on their shelves again. Well this year I haven't really started my Christmas shopping. Only have one present and that is for my eldest grand daughter Rhiannon. The twins celebrated their 8 birthday earlier in the month and their little brother Noah had his birthday in August. Off we went to the pet shop here and Grandma bought them fish. I think their mum is over cleaning the fish tanks by now. Callum has 2 gold fish and Noah and Rhiannon each have fighting fish so in total 3 tanks to maintain.

Well looking back over the year it certainly has been a eventful one. Transferring at work into a Management position earlier this year has certainly seen me busy. Having to say goodbye to an old school friend 3 months ago as she lost her battle with cancer. Its a funny old world the people who come and go in your life. I met up with her and her hubby a couple of years ago when we travelled down to Tassie. That was the pre cancer days. It is amazing how many old friends you can now find on social media.

A few months ago we traded in the Camper Trailer and upgraded to a 21 foot caravan with nearly everything we need to travel around this country when we retire. Yes I am now thinking of retirement. I have a 4 year plan. This time in 4 years I will not be working fulltime. We will be on the road travelling around and picking up odd jobs as we go for money. I will be taking Green me up Granny on the road and spreading my soap love around the country. I am really looking forward to that. I have made so many friends who share my passion in creating beautiful items from oils.
Once again thanks to social media this has occurred. There is now a Aussie soap making group on facebook and last weekend we had our first meet up. One of many that will happen around the place.

We had a great couple of hours at Southbank all talking about the one thing that we all have in common. Our passion for soap making. Plus we spoke about a lot of other things.
A truly alternative market. If you are after the unusual you will find it here. Whether you are looking for vintage, punk, gothic or just something out of the ordinary these are the markets to visit. I will be attending all of them in SE Queensland up until Christmas. It is going to be a busy time. I also have a couple of new wholesale customers coming on board. The talented Suzi from Co-op Stop and Jen from Green Frog Gourmet Foods. Plus you can find my soaps locally on the Peninsula Deb at Redcliffe 2nd Hand.

Any way like I said only 15 weekends until Christmas and 9 of them I have market stalls at. Looking forward to meeting my regular and new customers.

A first for this Granny.Well yesterday saw me trying for the first time ever to make Liquid Soap. For years and years I have been making CP and HP Soaps and truly love it but lately I am starting to believe that I could do it with my eyes closed and it is such an easy process for me. My range of soaps has grown to a massive 40+ types using the most amazing ingredients that you find in the fridge and in your cupboard.

I belong to so many different Soap Groups on Facebook. It is great to talk to others through out the world who share the same passion with me. We are always getting ideas from each other and learning new tricks of the trade. A couple of days ago I joined a Liquid Soap group. You see I have had the ingredients at home for over a year in the back of the cupboard in my soap making room still in the original postage box from one of my suppliers on the Sunshine Coast. Late yesterday it was finally out of the box and ready for usage.

Anyway at my home I own two slowcookers. One for food which I rarely use and one for soap making which is over used. Yesterday it came out for usage.
First of all I had to mix the Potassium Hydroxide with the water. Yes I know its a chemical but guess what if you don't use it you can't make soap. Even in bar soap you need Sodium Hydroxide. If you don't use it all you have is a bucket of fat. All soap has to be made with it.
Any soap maker or retailer that you buy your soap from says they don't use it is a liar. But just remember when you buy your soap there is no trace of it in your soap.
I don't have a photo of me mixing the Pot Hydroxide to the water but it really made a crackling noise. After this process I left the bucket in a safe place and then turned on the crockpot on high and started melting down the oils.

Oils melting in the crockpot.

After the oils were melted down I pulled the ceramic bowl from the crockpot, turning it off and then pour the Potassium Hydroxide into the oils. To this I decided to pull out the trusty stick blender and started blending. Now normally when you make CP soap it will go to trace (thick custard consistency) quite quickly but with liquid soap it takes quite awhile. So I blended for about 3-4 minutes then walk away for about 5 minutes then did it again.

Stirring with the stick blender.

Now this blending and walking away I did for quiet some time. About 30 minutes until I felt it was thick enough.

Custard like consistency.

Now I had it thick enough it was time for it to do its thing. I placed the bowl back into the cooker. Put the cooker on high with the lid on and walked away. I had already read up on the different phrases it goes through. Every 10-15 minutes I would come back, lift the lid and stir.

Liquid Soap

This is what it looked like this morning. I neutralized it with the citric acid solution in the recipe. I was concerned with the colour but it is fine. I suppose we all look at those beautiful clear or colourful liquid soaps that are mass produced and available in our supermarkets. But after some research this morning I would rather use Liquid Soap made by a Artisan Soap maker then a supermarket one.

My ingredients are:
Coconut oil
Castor Oil
Olive Oil,
Water,
Potassium Hydroxide
citric acid
Essential Oils (Australian Tea Tree and Pine)

7 ingredients is all it is.

I researched before the ingredients of one well known brand we have available in our supermarket and here is their list of ingredients.

Water

Sodium Laureth Sulfate

Acrylates Copolymer

Cocamidopropyl Betaine

Fragrance

Sodium Chloride

DMDM Hydantoin

Sodium Hydroxide

Tetrasodium EDTA

Zea Mays (Corn) Oil

Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter)

Citric Acid

Gelatin

Acacia Senegal Gum

Punica Granatum (Pomegranate) Fruit Extract

Mangifera Indica (Mango) Fruit Extract

Mica

Xanthan Gum

Titanium Dioxide

FD&C Red No. 40

Ext. D&C Violet No. 2

My liquid soap may not look as pretty as theirs but I would rather use mine then theirs.

I hope you have enjoyed this blog on my first attempt of Liquid Soapmaking. Now the pot is cleaned and put away. Today being Sunday I am bringing out my food slow cooker to cook a piece of corned silverside in ginger beer. Now that's another recipe.

Have a great Sunday everyone.
Work has been hectic running a Day Service and a Residential property and yesterday asked to look after another one. A year of audits and a external audit in two weeks. That has been the last 6 months of my life. As you all maybe aware over the last year I have been enjoying time away in our camper trailer but last Friday we picked up our caravan. Its been two years searching to find the one that would suit us both.
Each week I will post my favourite photo of the week and tell you what and why it is.

This photo was taken last Saturday night at 1770 in Queensland. For those who don't know where 1770 is it is approx 500 kms north of Brisbane. A small seaside town where there is no traffic lights but an amazing fishing village. We were camping in the camping grounds which was on the beach front. This was the sunset last Saturday. I loved watching the sunset that day. In my busy life of work I am normally driving home in peak hour traffic and I miss out in enjoying this amazing part of the day. While we were up there relaxing I found time to really enjoy the simple things.
So relaxing for a change. For the last 5years I have been part of one of the many festivals here at Redcliffe on Good Friday for the Brisbane to Gladstone Boat Race. This year I decided that I would not be at any festivals and instead Bill, William and I went away camping to Mt Warning Rainforest Park just over the border. What an amazing place and the owners were so friendly that we have already booked for next easter with a longer stay. We were amazed that the weather was quite good except for Sunday Night when the heavens opened up but thats the joy of camping.

I have been neglecting my blog lately and I am sorry for that. Presently my full time work has been quite stressful but hopefully at the end of the week when I lose a chunk of it I will be able to get back on top of things that I truly enjoy. With this in mind this was the reason for the camping trip.

After spending 2 hours in the traffic. Note to self next year we will be leaving a day earlier. So many campers and caravans out on Good Friday. Everyone had the same idea this easter. We arrived at our destination.
Recently a Dove Soap has had an advertisement on the TV on why people shouldn't use soap. They are stating all soaps are bad for your skin. How wrong can they be. Handmade natural soaps are full of goodness. Real Handmade Soaps are natural.

What is really on the store shelf?
We have become accustom to mass produced soaps in the supermarket and $2 shops. But did you know quite alot of the soaps we purchase in the supermarket are really beauty bars full of chemicals including Dove. Lets look at their ingredients label of Dove Soap.

Sodium Lauroyl Isethionate, Slearic Acid, Sodium Palmitate, Aqua Lauric Acid, Sodium Isethionate, Sodium Stearate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Palm Kernelate, Parfum, Glycerin, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Chloride, zinc Oxide, Citric Acid, Tetrasodium EDTA, Tetrasodium Etidronate, Alumina, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Benzyl Alcohol, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Citronellol, Coumarin, Hexyl Cinnamal, Limonene, Linalool.....

I don't think any of these ingredients are good for your skin.

Homemade Cold Process Soap
Real homemade soap is natural. It starts with three simple ingredients: water, sodium hydroxide and oil. The water dissolves the sodium, allowing it to be evenly distributed during mixing. The sodium solution is then mixed with the oils. The sodium reacts to the oils using aggressive mixing. This reaction is called saponification, which literally means “to make soap”. There is absolutely NO SODIUM HYDROXIDE remaining after the mixture saponifies.

Handmade soap is not mass produced and soapmakers around the world take pride in their products. Real Handmade Soap doesn't dry your skin because it is made from nourishing oils.

Lets look at the oils I use in my soapmaking.

OLIVE OIL: Contributes to: soap hardness, stable lather, slippery feel, conditioning, moisturizing, Olive Oil attracts external moisture to your skin, helping to keep skin soft and supple.

CASTOR OIL: Contributes to: fluffy lather, stable lather, conditioning, moisturizing, quicker
trace, softer soap. Often used to superfat soaps. Castor oil is unique in being almost entirely composed of ricinoleic fatty acid, found in no other oils and possessing a high affinity for water molecules. This makes it an excellent humectant, attracting and holding moisture to the
skin.

COCONUT OIL:Contributes to: soap hardness, fluffy lather, quicker trace. Coconut oil makes soaps lather beautifully . It will make a very hard, white bar of soap that lathers well even in very hard water - even in sea water. Coconut oil is light and not greasy and is resistant to spoiling. Used in skin care formulations, coconut oil is emollient, moisturizing, conditioning and protecting to the skin.

GRAPESEED OIL:Used in soaps as a superfatting oil, grapeseed oil is a lightweight oil that absorbs into the skin quickly without leaving a heavy greasy feeling. It has mildly astringent qualities and is said to be useful for acne and other skin complaints.

SUNFLOWER OIL: Contributes to: stable lather, conditioning, silky feel, softer soap, slower trace. Sunflower oil contains Vitamin E, so it naturally resists going rancid.

RICE BRAN OIL: Rice bran oil is moisturizing and is a good choice for inclusion in formulations intended for mature, delicate or sensitive skin.

All natural oils that are great for your skin.

I can actually call my soap soap but Dove has to call their product a beauty bar. I know what I would prefer to use.
It was 6 months of planning and some late nights leading up to it but what a great weekend we all had. The very large house catered for all of us and the view to the mountains and the ocean was spectacular. The company was great and new friendships were made and loads of learning.

Its been awhile since I have done a blog. Its been so busy here lately with my fulltime job as well as Green me up Granny stuff. Those of you that don't already know I was interviewed by the Sunday Mail in Queensland on Handmade Soaps and the photographer came out to the house to take some photo's of myself and my soap.

We have had some crazy weather up here in Sunny Queensland lately and the humidity has been terrible. So much that the purchase of a De humidifier was needed for my curing room and unfortunately after much thought decided maybe selling soap with no wrapping wasn't the best thing to do so now my soaps are wrapped with plastic so they are protected from the weather. Over the last couple of weeks hubby and I have had a marathon of soap wrapping. I estimate we wrapped close to 1000 soaps. Funny how I thought I had plenty but after I filled a few orders I realised more now is needed and this will be a regular thing to do when I come home from work each night.

My soaps are now available in a few places for purchase including Handmade on High Street, a delivery of our soaps this Saturday to Mimmis means if you are in the Forest Hill district you will be able to purchase a range of my most popular soaps from Miriams amazing shop. Side Street Vintage
also has a range of my Natural range of soaps for people who have very sensitive skin and my soaps and candles will be available next week from Homespun .
It is the best time of the year. I love searching the shops and markets looking for the gift for that special person. I love looking at all the christmas lights and this year we have quite a few houses in my Street in the festive mood. I enjoy the christmas festivities. So far in the last couple of weeks during work I have enjoyed 2 christmas luncheons and day of carols. Last week a night at the Coffee Club for dinner with some work colleagues and tonight with the girls I spend most of the week with at the Comedy Club at Albion. It has really been a busy time this year especially the relaunch of all my soaps at various markets around the area as well as my candles.

Last night was my last market of the year which was in King George Square in the city. I remember as a child Mum and Dad taking us into the city to see the Myer Christmas windows. This is when Myers was originally in Adelaide Street and who can forget the massive christmas tree in the square. As a child I loved it and last night bought back all those memories.

Even though the tree has had a massive facelift and lights up on solar it still looks magnificant. Last night the square was packed with markets as well as Myer Christmas Parade.
December 12, 2012. I think it has been a magical year especially the last couple of months. This date won't happen again so now is the time to do something special. I have been reading today that it is a great day to marry. At least I suppose you won't ever forget your anniversary. What ever you are doing today make some part of it special. Enjoy this day.
